Services and facilities

All of Berlin's major stations have been renovated and modernised since reunification. Each of the stations here has a ticket office and the usual facilities such as coin-operated lockers and / or a left luggage service. At several locations within the station you will find information stands called Service Points (yes, in English!) - these are for information only and do not sell tickets. They can provide timetables and usually small maps of the surrounding areas.

Most stations have a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Shops are usually open on Sundays and outside of usual German store hours (e.g. until 10pm). All have toilet facilities, although these are usually painfully expensive.

There is some bilingual signage but not always (see below for a list of station-related vocabulary). Station staff at ticket offices usually speak English, though if you have a complicated itenary it's a good idea to write down exactly when and where you want to go to avoid misunderstandings. Staff at the Service Points are generally trained to give information in English but cannot provide detailed ticket / fare information. Station staff are mostly pretty helpful but there's a small number of "bad apples" who treat passengers as a major annoyance.
