Neighborhoods in Berlin

Berlin, like all large cities, contains a huge number of individual neighborhoods, each with their own individual character. Informally, a Berlin neighborhood is are known as a "Kiez" (sometimes spelt "Kietz") and is not an officially defined area. Typically it refers to the streets around where one lives, extending far enough to cover local shops and community facilities and maybe a nearby station.

Another definition of a neighbourhood is the Stadtteil, a formally defined sub-division of one of Berlin's twelve districts, which have become increasingly important as local identifiers since 2001, when the traditional 23 districts were merged into the current twelve.
