Palast der Republik
Palast der Republik
![]() The Palast der Republik was East Germany's former parliament building - and, paradoxical as it may seem, a major entertainment complex. Completed in 1976, it was closed in 1990 due to fears about possble contamination from asbestos used to fireproof the building's steel frame. The future of the building was a subject of heated debate, partly because it stood on the site of the former Imperial Palace. Eventually it was decided to tear the building down, and as of 2007 it is undergoing "deconstruction" - being taken apart bit-by-bit.
