KaDeWe - Kaufhaus des Westens

Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe)

KaDeWe - Kaufhaus des Westens, Wittenbergplatz, Berlin Berlin's largest and most luxurious department store (and also the largest department store on mainland Europe), located on the Tauentzienstrasse where it meets Wittenbergplatz. It has just completed a programme of renovation, increasing floor space and making it a more attractive shopping destination than ever. Check out the famous food department on the sixth floor and the restaurant-cafeteria in the seventh floor above it.

History

KaDeWe was opened in 1907, a period when Berlin was expanding westwards and the area around the Kurfürstendamm was becoming fashionable. It quickly established itself as one of Berlin's premier department stores. During the Second World War the store was heavily damaged, mainly by an Allied bomber crashing onto the roof which caused a fire to gut the building. The structure was still sound however, and by 1950 KaDeWe was back in operation. Over the decades the store has been heavily remodelled several times, the most prominent addition being the glass-roofed seventh floor, added at the start of the 90's and which houses a restaurant complex.

KaDeWe is now part of the KarstadtQuelle retailing group.
