Berlin Tegel Airport TXL

Tegel Airport (IATA code: TXL) is the busier of Berlin's two airports. Located within the Berlin city limits not far from the western city centre, it is the main airport for domestic flights to and from Berlin and is served by most European national carriers.

Tip: Tegel is scheduled to close in 2012, when it will be replaced by the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI).

Access

Tegel is well-served by BVG buses which provide fast and efficient links to both the western and eastern city centres. The express bus X9 will take you to Zoo Station in about 15 minutes, while the airport bus line TXL runs via Berlin-Hauptbahnhof to the eastern city centre, terminating at Alexanderplatz.

Tegel is in VBB fare zone A. Tickets can be bought on boarding a bus or from vending machines located at the bus stops. However it's less hassle to get them at the BVG booth just inside the terminal building at the entrance near the bus-stops.

Note that Tegel does not have any rail or U-Bahn connections.

Tip: although you can find an S-Bahn station called Tegel (and an adjoining U-Bahn station called Alt-Tegel) on the transport map, these are nowhere near the airport!

Taxis are readily available; the fare into the city centre will set you back around €15 - €30.

Facilities

Tegel is a fairly compact airport. The main terminal building contains a small retail section, including several souvenir shops, a small supermarket / bakery and stores selling travel-related items (see here for a full list). There is a small number of cafés, restaurants and bars.

ATMs / cash machines are available opposite at gates 4, 10/11 and 15 in the main terminal building, and in the ground floor of the main building. There is a Berliner Volksbank ATM in Terminal C. There are also small branches of the Postbank and Berliner Bank as well as several bureaus de change.
