Bakeries

Germany is famous for its bread, and has three bread museums (none of which are in Berlin, unfortunately).

Berlin's bread and cakes don't have the best reputation however. This is partly due to the dominance of large bakery chains, which mass-produce their stuff. While it's OK, it's nothing to get excited about.

Niche bakeries

Fortunately there's a whole world of smaller bakeries snapping at the heels of the big chains, offering bread of various sorts from Germany and around the world which actually tastes nice.
