The Berlin FenceThe Berlin Fence is an alternative name for the Berlin Wall. While some parts of the Wall did resemble a fence, especially in the early days, once fortified really was a wall, mainly a concrete wall stretching all the way around West Berlin. For most of its course it was a double wall. Some parts of the Berlin Wall on the eastern side did however include fences as part of the infrastructure, mainly less security-critical areas. In some areas there were fences and fencing between the inner and outer walls to hinder movement of possible escapees. Note that before the Berlin Wall's construction in 1961 there were no fences or other barriers between East and West Berlin. Parts of the border between East and West Germany consisted of fences. This was constructed from about 1953 onwards and predates the Berlin Wall. |
