Tram to Hauptbahnhof in 2011

In Berlin, tram construction is tradtionally conducted at glacial speed, it seems. The much needed extension of the M10 to Berlin-Hauptbahnhof from the current provisional terminus at Nordbahnhof won't now be completed until 2011.

The initial planning envisaged an opening date of 2002, later put back 2006 to coincide with the delayed opening of the Hauptbahnhof itself. Legal mistakes in the planning process were largely responsible for this first postponement. The current setback is due to legal action by residents along the new stretch of line, which is to run through the comparatively narrow Invalidenstraße. Construction is now due to begin in 2009.
