Public Holidays in Berlin in 2011
Germany takes its public holidays seriously: they're "celebrated" on the day they fall on (no postponement to the following Monday etc.), and - with certain exceptions - all shops are closed.
Note that public holidays in Germany differ somewhat between federal states (Bundesländer), and some of the more Catholic states have extra holidays.
Overview of public holidays in Berlin (2011):

April 22 (Fri.) |
Good Friday | Karfreitag |
April 25 (Mon.) |
Easter Monday | Ostermontag |
May 1 (Sun.) | Mayday | Maifeiertag |
June 2 (Thu.) | Ascension Day | Christ Himmelfahrt |
June 13 (Mon.) | Whitsun / Pentecost | Pfingstmontag |
October 3 (Mon.) | Unity Day | Tag der Deutschen Einheit |
December 25 (Sun.) | Christmas Day | 1. Weihnachtstag |

Hi Monika, I think you mean January 6th? It's definitely not a public holiday in Berlin, though there are some traditions associated with it.

I notice boxing day (december 26) is a bank holiday. Will the bars and clubs still be open to accomodate a stag do or is another city more suitable? Thanks

The 24th (Christmas Eve) is is totally dead, but by the 26th people are gearing up for New Year's Eve, so most places will probably be open. It might be worth calling the places you want go, just in case.
