Public Holidays in Berlin in 2009

Germany takes its public holidays seriously: they're "celebrated" on the day they fall on (no postponement to the following Monday etc.), and - with certain exceptions - all shops are closed.

Note that public holidays in Germany differ somewhat between federal states (Bundesländer), and some of the more Catholic states have extra holidays.

Overview of public holidays in Berlin (2009):

Date Name in German
January 1 (Thu.) New Years's Day Neujahr
April 10 Good Friday Karfreitag
April 13 Easter Monday Ostermontag
May 1 (Fri.) Mayday Maifeiertag
May 21 (Thu.) Whitsun / Pentecost Christ Himmelfahrt
June 1 (Mon.) Ascension Day
Pfingstmontag
October 3 (Sat.) Unity Day Tag der Deutschen Einheit
December 25 (Fri.) Christmas Day 1. Weihnachtstag
December 26 (Sat.) Boxing Day 2. Weihnachtstag

The main museums (Pergamon Museum etc.) will be open as usual on the 25th and 26th.

However they will be closed on the *24th*, Christmas Eve, from 2pm onwards. In Germany, Christmas Eve is the main part of the Christmas celebrations so although not an official holiday, pretty much everything shuts down in the early afternoon.
