American Embassy
Botschaft der Vereinigten Staaten
Approaching the American Embassy from Unter den Linden, it's easy to get a feel for what Berlin was like in the days just after the Berlin Wall was created. The road is blocked by concrete barriers and barbed wire, while armed guards keep a watchful eye on anyone who approaches the border between US sovereign territory and the rest of the world. If there's a demonstration going on it's even more fun. Forget Checkpoint Charlie - this is the real thing. Due to the embassy's "fortification", development of the surrounding buildings has been disrupted, and some (such as the one in the right on the photograph) give an impression of what the area was like during GDR times. New Embassy BuildingCurrently the United States is constructing a new embassy on the site it occupied until the Second World War near to the Brandenburg Gate at the intersection of Behrenstraße and Ebertstraße designed by Californian architects Moore Ruble Yudell. Completion is scheduled for 2008. Address and AccessNeustädtische Kirchstraße 4-5
