U55

The as yet uncompleted platform at Hauptbahnhof

The U55, currently under construction, will become Berlin's shortest U-Bahn line, linking Unter den Linden with Hauptbahnhof via Bundestag (Station).

The line is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2008, several years later than planned due to continuing construction delays. It's not even certain whether the financially constrained BVG will actually have the resources to run the line, as it it only of limited use and is not expected to attract a significant number of passengers. The U55 is intended to form part of a westwards extension of the U5 but budgetary constraints have led to the postponement of the construction of the section between Unter den Linden and Alexanderplatz. A tentative date for construction begin has been set for 2010, but it's looking increasingly likely that this will be delayed too.
