Opened in 1924 as "Belle-Alliance-Straße", Mehringdamm originally had two platforms with three tracks and was where the former line CI (now the U6) branched off the CII (now the eastern section of the U7). In 1946 the station was renamed to "Franz-Mehring-Straße", and in 1947 to "Mehringdamm". Following the westwards extension of the U7 towards Spandau, the station was rebuilt with four tracks and two platforms.
Mehringdamm is in VBB fare zone A.
