Bornholmer Straße (Station)Bornholmer Straße is an interchange station on Berlins S-Bahn network in the north of Berlin. Fare ZoneBornholmer Straße is in VBB fare zone B. History and FactsOpened in its current form in 1935 as part of the construction of the new North-South S-Bahn line, Bornholmer Straße lies just on the eastern side of the border between the former East and West Berlin, and is an interchange between the northern S-Bahn routes, one of which ran through West Berlin, the other through East Berlin. Its layout enables crossing-free routing of trains in all directions. As early as 1952 the GDR constructed a new link between the Ringbahn from Schönhauser Allee to Pankow bypassing Bornholmer Straße and allowing East Berlin S-Bahn trains to reach the north of Berlin without passing too close to West Berlin territory. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, Bornholmer Straße found itself in nomansland between the outer and the inner wall. It became one of Berlin's ghost stations, and extra fortifications ensured that the East and West Berlin S-Bahn routes, which passed very close, were kept very seperate from one another. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, West Berlin trains once again stopped at Bornholmer Straße, while temporary platforms were constructed for trains on the eastern line. Subsequently the whole area was remodelled, retaining the original station but allowing trains from the eastern lines to pass through it, creating a new set of route combinations. Route Information
